Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know Sunday morning

1. Armed men suspected to be kidnappers have reportedly abducted the remains of a late Deputy Corps Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Augustine O. Ikwue, including the mourners accompanying him to his hometown at Otukpo in Benue state. The vehicle conveying the corpse ran into ambush along Ochadamu-Ejule road in Ofu local government of Kogi state around 6pm, on Thursday.

2. Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Dr. Chibuzo Okereke, has explained that the selection of Hajja Bintu Konto as his running mate for the 2027 election was driven solely by competence and national interest. In a statement issued in Abuja, on Saturday Okereke described Konto’s nomination, ratified by the party’s leadership, as “another defining moment” in the party’s push for a “Nigerians First” government.

3. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, in the company of a senior medical officer in the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Moses Azuoru, on Saturday, visited the rescued Oriire kidnap victims at the 2nd Division medical centre where they have been receiving treatment after their release.

4. Benue State Police Command has arrested seven additional suspects, including four traditional chiefs and an 80-year-old man, over the gruesome murder of the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, Benue State chapter, Ardo Risku Mohammad, and one Yakubu Isa in Otukpo Local Government Area, LGA, of the state. 

5. Five persons, including four children, have died after landslides triggered by 48 hours of heavy rainfall devastated Ikot Anwatim Community, Calabar Municipality, Cross River. The landslides also destroyed two houses and injured two other residents, according to the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency, CR-SEMA.

6. The Lagos State Building Control Agency on Saturday evacuated occupants of a distressed residential building at Akinyele Bus Stop in Abesan Estate. The agency also commenced the demolition of the property after structural experts declared it unsafe for human habitation.

7. A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Niger State, Jonathan Vatsa, has criticised the reported decision to retain Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 presidential election, warning that Christians will not support another Muslim-Muslim ticket. Vatsa described the move as “a direct insult” to the Christian community, saying it was politically insensitive and could cost the ruling party Christian votes.

8. Operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, VCRU, of the Police Command in Lagos State have arrested five suspected cultists and recovered weapons, suspected hard drugs and other incriminating items. The command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Lagos. She said the suspects were allegedly involved in terrorising residents of Apapa, Ijora and Badia areas of the state.

9. Strait of Hormuz, a major route of petroleum products for Europe, Asia and some parts of the world, has been shut amid renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran. The Strait was initially shut during the war between the US, Israel and Iran, shooting up fuel prices across the world. But after about six months, the US and Iran signed a peace deal which led to the reopening of the route.

10. South Africa’s sports ministry has announced the death of Bafana Bafana midfielder, Jayden Adams. He was found dead in his home, and the cause of death is still unclear.
