Iran declares Mojtaba Khamenei Supreme Leader

Mojtaba Khamenei has been named the new Supreme Leader of Iran, succeeding his father, according to Iranian state media.

The development follows the death of Iran’s long-serving Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, who had held the position since 1989.

Reports indicate that Khamenei was killed in U.S.–Israeli airstrikes at the beginning of the ongoing conflict on February 28, 2026.

Following his death, Iran’s powerful clerical body, the Assembly of Experts, convened to select a successor.

After deliberations, the council reportedly chose Mojtaba Khamenei to take over the country’s highest political and religious office.

Earlier, DAILY POST reported that Donald Trump, President of the United States, had warned that whoever emerges as Iran’s next Supreme Leader would need Washington’s approval to remain in power.

Speaking during an interview with ABC News on Sunday, Trump said the United States intends to ensure that Iran’s leadership does not pose a long-term nuclear threat.

“He’s going to have to get approval from us,” Trump said, adding that any leader who fails to meet that condition “is not going to last long.”
