‎1. The Senate, on Thursday, approved the nomination of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. The confirmation of Amupitan followed a screening session by lawmakers in the Senate Chamber during a Committee of the Whole.

2. The Nigerian Medical Association has concluded that the ailment complained of by the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, is not life-threatening. Its medical team was constituted following an order by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, who directed an independent assessment of Kanu’s health amid conflicting claims by medical experts engaged by both the prosecution and the defence.

3. The Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, has demolished 11 duplexes in Abuja over flagrant violation of city planning regulations, warning that developers who disregard official directives will not only lose their investments but also face severe penalties. The affected buildings, located along Garba Duba Street in Dutse District, were erected directly under high-tension electricity lines and across stream channels — posing serious safety and environmental risks.

4. Eight security personnel were killed in an ambush along Gusau–Funtua highway in Zamfara State, on Thursday. The incident occurred when joint security operatives, comprising officers from the Nigeria Police Force and members of the Zamfara State Community Protection Guards, were responding to a distress call at Tungawa village in Tsafe Local Government Area.

5. The Federal Ministry of Education has dismissed reports circulating in some newspapers and online platforms suggesting that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board is no longer required for admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria. In a press release issued on Thursday, the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, described the claim as “false, baseless, and did not originate from the Federal Ministry of Education.

6. Members of the Joint Task Force, in a combined operation involving hunters and vigilantes, arrested two injured bandits and their doctors, setting their camps ablaze in the Aherin-Bunu community in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State. This was disclosed by the State’s Security Adviser, Cdr Jerry Omodara (rtd), on Thursday.

7. The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a man, Lawal Faruq, who allegedly set fire to his ex-lover after their relationship went sour. It was learnt on Thursday that the incident happened at a military barracks in Ibadan, the state capital. A counterinsurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, who shared details of the incident on X, disclosed that the suspect claimed he and the victim had taken an oath never to separate.

8. The Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted 59 foreign nationals for their involvement in a major cybercrime syndicate uncovered by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre. The foreigners, identified as citizens of China and Malaysia, were among the 130 suspects arrested during a police raid on a building in the Jahi area of Abuja on November 3, 2024.

9. No fewer than three persons are feared killed and some others still trapped when a trailer carrying a 40-foot container fell and crushed three tricycles at the Mgbaemene Bus Stop, near Upper Iweka, along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway on Thursday. It was also gathered that the incident angered residents and motorists who made a bonfire to protest the government’s inability to fix the very deplorable road.

10. The ruling All Progressives Congress on Thursday gained another foothold in the National Assembly following the defection of Senator Friday Konbowei from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party to its fold. Konbowei, who represents Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, announced his defection in a letter addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and read at plenary before the close of the day’s session.
