The Kano State Government has changed the name of the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Disabled to the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and People with Special Needs.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf approved the change during a recent State Executive Council meeting at the Government House, Kano.
In a statement, Commissioner Hajiya Amina Sani Abdullahi said the decision followed a request to replace the word “Disabled” with the more respectful term “People with Special Needs.”
She explained that the old term was outdated and stigmatizing.
“Nobody is truly disabled — everyone has something valuable to offer,” the Commissioner said, noting that the new name reflects dignity and recognizes people’s potential.
She praised Governor Yusuf for his consistent concern for people with special needs.
“There has never been a time I met with His Excellency without him asking how people with special needs are doing or how the government can better support them,” she added.
The Commissioner stressed that the renaming is more than symbolic, but a foundation for future reforms to promote inclusion, empowerment, and equal opportunities for all.
