Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know Sunday morning

1. Musliu Akinsanya, popularly called ‘MC Oluomo’ has emerged the National President of the National Union of Road Transport Union (NURTW) after a consensus election by union stakeholders and delegates. He emerged on Saturday evening at the Quadrennial Delegate Conference at its Zonal Secretariat in Osogbo, Osun State on Saturday.

2. The newly elected chairman of Ogbaru LGA in Anambra State, Franklin Nwadialo has been arrested in Texas, United States (US), for allegedly running a $3.3m romance scam. The US department of justice confirmed his arrest in a statement. It noted that Nwadialo is facing a 14-count charge and risks a 20-year sentence if found guilty.

3. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will depart Abuja on Sunday for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to attend the Joint Arab-Islamic Summit. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who disclosed this in a statement, on Saturday, said the summit will focus on the prevailing situation in the Middle East.

4. The new armed group, known as Lakurawa, has reportedly killed 15 people and rustled over 100 cows in Mera, Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State. A prominent personality in the town, Alhaji Bashir Isah Mera, while confirming the attack, said the group invaded the town as people were getting set for Jumat prayer.

5. The head of the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja’s family, Pa Tajudeen Lagbaja, has expressed regret obtaining Nigerian Defence Academic (NDA) form for the deceased. Pa Tajudeen, the younger brother of the late COAS’s father, stated that he would not have bought the form had he known it would lead to his death.

6. The Adamawa State Police Command arrested a 19-year-old man, Aliyu Yaro, on Friday for allegedly killing his three-day-old baby boy. In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by the command spokesperson, CSP Suleiman Nguroji, it was disclosed that the baby was the child of Yaro’s girlfriend.

7. Kwara State Police Command announced that detectives have recovered the severed head of Rafiu Akano, a commercial motorcyclist who was murdered in Asunlere village, Oke-Oyi, within Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State on Sunday. The Police had earlier recovered the headless body of the late Okada rider on Monday at the crime scene.

8. The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of several officers in connection with the alleged killing of a Kwara State University student, Suleiman Olayinka, in the state. This comes barely three weeks after the dismissal and prosecution of three police officers over the alleged murder of a Kwara Polytechnic student, Quoyum Abdulyekeen.

9. Outgoing Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki has alleged that the All Progressives Congress, APC, is borrowing between N2 billion and N5 billion to finance the inauguration of the new governor. Obaseki, who disclosed this at the inauguration of a 10-man caretaker committee members of the State’s PDP in Benin City, however, lamented that the outgoing government was not carried along nor invited for the inauguration.

10. The military says it has uncovered a desperate recruitment drive on social media by terrorists, particularly the ISWAP terrorist group, and vowed that troops will sustain the offensives to eliminate all threats by the terrorists. Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj Gen Edward Buba, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, affirming that troops’ operations had severely depleted their ranks and files.
