In a bid to rid Abia of the crime of infant trafficking and illegal adoptions, the state government has rehabilitated and reunited pregnant girls and young mothers it rescued from an illegal care and charity home with their families.

About 20 ‘social mothers’ were rescued from Nma charity and social mothers rehabilitation centre in Umumkpeyi, Isiala Ngwa North LGA, an illegal care home in June by the Abia State government and taken to the hospital where they were they received medical treatment, counselled and enlightened about the evils of fake caregivers.
The young women, some of whom were alleged to be in various stages of pregnancy as of the time of their rescue, were also visited by the wife of Abia State governor, Mrs Pricilla Otti, a day after their rescue, where she promised to rehabilitate, reform and reintegrate the abused women into the society.
Speaking during the re-uniting exercise this week, Abia State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Ngozi Blessing Felix said her ministry has rendered counselling and rehabilitation services to the social mothers.
The Commissioner who was represented by a director in the ministry, Mrs Onwuka Nnennaya, noted that the state government deemed it necessary to re-unite the young mothers, who have been under their custody and care with their families.
She enjoined the families and host communities of the rehabilitated persons to see them as their own, cherish and show them love devoid of stigmatization or criticism.
In her response on behalf of others, Blessing Otuonye of Umuakaba Ogbodiukwu Umuopara in Umuahia South LGA, who gave birth to twins who eventually died, thanked the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation as well as the management of Madonna College of Health for their benevolence and promised to turn new leaves in their families, adding that they have realized their mistakes.
It would be recalled that the women were rescued on June 4 2023 by the state government while one Katherine Ngwamma, an alleged chef in the illegal care home, was arrested.
